hi

thanks for kind comment.
Having come this far from a very poor family I learn that poverty is not just the lack of material things. It is the poverty of access and the lack of knowledge about where resources may be sought and found.
These links were forwarded to me by a friend.
I hope through access to such info, kids from all backgrounds will dare to dream big dreams and aim high.

I must add
the Kenyalang Medical Foundation
c/0 Malaysian Medical Association, Sarawak Branch
email: mmaswak@streamyx.com
+6082 - 258542 (tel/fax)

Awards on merit for financially deserving students.
Set up by doctors to nurture the next generation of doctors.

Hi,

My daughter is reading Medicine in Cambridge U, UK. Are you aware of any scholarships that she is eligible for?

Thanks
KY

hi,

the Malaysian Govt does award JPA scholarships for Malaysian Medical students for overseas universities, but I am not sure they would consider students who are already in University.
I guess there is not harm going to the office or website to ask.
If she is outstanding, try ASEAN scholarship - although I am not sure if they have this option -
there will be a bond of course - which may not be worth it, if she does not intend to work in Spore immediately on graduation?

The Kenyalang Medical foundation only supports Sarawak students for local university - initially it was RM5000 yearly for five years.
(half of which the student will have to repay one year after he /she starts working). This is to help us sustain the funds to help more students.

There is no bond, only an understanding the student will stay on to work in Sarawak for the next few years.

Dr. Tan, the truth is that its really sad how Sarawak doesn't provide any form of scholarship for medical students who are studying abroad. Yes, most medical students actually come from wealthy family whose parents are doctors and are able to support them. But what about the rest of us. I'm a 22 year old medical student who just completed my third year of my MBBS degree at IMU and will be going to University of New South Wales in Australia next year. When I opted for the program, I had a parent who was working and could support me but illness has forced my mother into retirement and my dad is deceased. Basically, I'm entering a university that costs loads of money without an income generator in the family. I'm a Sarawakian and was an ASEAN scholar in a prestigious high school in Singapore. My results are exceptional and my co-curricular activities are impressive as well. However, I just cannot seem to find an avenue to apply for a study loan let alone ask for a scholarship. This bags the question, who are all the scholarships given to. Do i need to compromise on the level of education by studying at a local university to have a chance at attaining my dream of becoming a doctor. I thought the purpose of giving scholarships is to retain the cream of the crop. Is quantity more important than quality. Anyways, Dr. Tan, if you do have any helpful advice, I'll be eternally grateful.

hi Richard

Thank you for your comment.
Most chinese malaysian medical students (in local or overseas U) do not have “rich parents”!
Most are supported by the sheer discipline n sacrifices of family members if not the parents.
I m sure you were one of them!

My parents were so poor, I would have gone into teacher training college, if the Malaysian gov’t had not given me a scholarship based on my (thank God) straight As and many extracurricular contributions.
My older Sister got a Teochew association scholarship for medicine in Taiwan.
From there, we, the older siblings in the family supported ALL the younger ones through to University - the so called "Chinese Family Scholarship”.

The Kenyalang Medical Foundation will be advertising for its 2012/13 scholarship loan awards next week - do watch out for it in the Borneo post -
I will try to post it here if the secretary sends me the advert.
It is for Rm10,000 per year, and renewable on good results - 5 k is a scholarship, n 5 k to be repayable in manageable installments once u start earning an income -
although u are going to NSW u can try applying.
An interview will be called soon after the closing date for shortlisted candidates.
KMF offers 1-2 scholarships a year.
The funds are contributed by doctors entirely to support the next generation of doctors.

you must continue to NSW and get good exposure and training there, since you have the opportunity.
How much would be needed in terms of fees etc.?
The reason why KMF is not offering support to students going to “foreign university” is because we realize the amount 10K will not go very far, n our fund cannot give more than that per student per year.

do give me your email address, I will communicate with you directly to save time.

good luck

Hi Dr. Tan

My email address is richard.teo@student.imu.edu.my. Also, I'm currently in Kuching so do let me know when the KMF actually advertises the scholarship. At the moment, I'm actually contemplating continuing my studies in a local university as opposed to UNSW because of the immense costs. Would you think that the exposure in Australia would be worth the entire cost estimated to be around the ballpark figure of slightly over half a million. Do give me your opinion so i can make a wholly educated decision. Thank you.

Hi Richard,

for the sake of other or intending medical students who may be facing the same dilemma of choices, I shall put some of my comments here - do check your email for the more personal comments.

My undergrad was in University of Malaya, but I was lucky to do postgrads in the London School of Tropical Medicine (Msc) and MRCP pediatrics in Edinburgh n the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I was offered a colombo plan for medicine in Canada, but that year for some reason the scholarships were stopped and the four awardees ended up in KL on JPA scholarships.
It was a blessing in many ways - otherwise I might have migrated and not stayed on and had the privilege of contributing to the development of health care in this country!

We had very good training and role models and the foundations of good practice n ethics have lasted to this day. We have many "world standard” locally trained doctors, many still here passing on their legacy and doing well locally n internationally.

If money is not an issue, of course it would be wonderful to try to get into world ranking universities. But if it means everyone else in the family have to give up on their dreams (and hopes of university education) - it is probably wiser to choose an affordable (recognized) university locally.

Undergrad education is just the beginning of a lifelong marathon in learning in medicine - you have to love to learn. U have to forget the bad old habits of malaysian education that rewards u for “spotting” exam questions n learning to pass n then to forget.
U have to learn to remember for the rest of life, be teachable and willing to learn from others who have gone ahead.

Straight As in A levels does not equal top medical school scores - often the top students don’t do so well as doctors, and the gold medalist in medical school may not progress beyond their first degree - burnt out.

If your attitude to learning is so that your patients will always get the best care, you will always be among the best, regardless of “origin of degree”.
You will have plenty of opportunities to work and train overseas, later.

Stay blessed!

hi

The Kenyalang Medical Foundation (founded by a group of doctors in Sarawak) awards strictly according to merit and deservedness of case - especially those who would not be able to afford otherwise.
We have awarded also to those who midway through their course have financial challenges.
As the funds are raised at the moment only from doctors, we usually award one scholarship a year, for those enrolled in local medical schools (govt or private).
